What to expect at a steakhouse
Steakhouses run from classic white-tablecloth chophouses with dry-aged prime beef to casual family steak chains and Western-style roadhouses with peanuts on the floor. The steak is the star, and sides – creamed spinach, baked potatoes, mac and cheese – are often ordered separately and shared.
What to order
- Ribeye or New York strip – the most flavorful classics
- Filet mignon – the most tender cut
- Shared sides – creamed spinach, potatoes, mushrooms
- Shrimp cocktail or wedge salad – traditional starters
Good to know
- Medium-rare is the default recommendation for most cuts.
- Upscale steakhouses usually need a reservation on weekends.
- Happy hour at the bar often offers smaller plates at lower prices.
